CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Hans’ portal took us back to the alliance headquarters. Our mages needed to rest, and we needed to get the lay of the land, figure out what Hana was doing, and come up with an effective strategy.

I wanted to go home and see my family, but I had to see what Hana was doing first. If Hana stuck to the pattern she’d followed in Berlin, she’d flood the atmosphere with energy from the fissure that would neutralize most of our mages. We’d be left with nothing more than our dirty dozen of mages who’d barely survived the first conflict.

If she’d already resurrected all the mages we killed once, we’d stand no chance against them with barely ten percent of the force we had before. The fact that Hans was able to gate us back to the alliance and that Jessie’s abilities were still working meant Hana hadn’t gotten so far in her plan yet. I needed to get a sense of how much time we had to bring the rest of our force against her if we were going to stand a chance. The one advantage we did have, was that Hana thought we were stuck in Berlin, but I knew she wasn’t wasting time. Her entire strategy was to leave us helpless halfway across the world while she built up an army we couldn’t stop before we found a way home.

“There’s a tall apartment complex just west of Gregory Park. You should be able to take us to the roof and we can look over the park, hopefully without her noticing our presence.”

Hans nodded. “Does she have Goebbels with her?”

“I’m not sure. She probably raised him soon after she broke through the fissure. We should assume he is back.”

“If he is, it won’t take long before he senses your arrival. He’ll know you made it back.”

I nodded. “All the more reason why we need to know what we’re facing as soon as possible. If she knows we’re already here, though, it might not be a bad thing. It might force her to re-strategize.”

Hans gated the two of us to the top of the apartment complex. We appeared behind a large air conditioning unit on the roof.

I stayed as low as I could and moved to the edge of the roof. It gave us a clear view of the park below.

Everything looked normal. No fissure. No Axis mages were lurking around. No Hana. No Goebbels.

“I thought they were here. A large fissure that spanned most of the park.”

Hans scratched his head. “They were here. I don’t understand.”

I sighed. “Hana must’ve closed the fissure and portaled her army elsewhere. My guess is that she knew you brought us back and decided to relocate.”

Hans grunted. “They aren’t corporeal, right? They came back from the dead.”

I nodded. “Our empaths won’t be able to locate them. I’m not sure if they aren’t corporeal. When Hana returned before, when Caedes brought her back, she had a body of a sort. It just wasn’t her body.
